Welcome to Part 1 of the Apex Intermediate First Aid – Blended course! This online session allows you to work at your own pace. When you want. Where you want.
This online program will introduce you to many topics related to first aid. For the second half of this course, which offers hands-on opportunities to practice skills and techniques, you must attend an in-class session.
This introductory section will introduce you to some basic concepts of first aid treatment.

Course Objectives
- Describe the importance of the OHS Bulletins
- Assess the scene and identify hazards
- Recognize life-threatening injuries
- Demonstrate how to provide first aid until medical aid arrives, loosen tight clothing, place the casualty in recovery position
- Demonstrate how to assess an airway, breathing, circulation and provide appropriate treatment
- How to perform a secondary assessment and record events
- Recognize when a casualty should be moved
- Basic structure and function of the respiratory & circulatory system
- Describe the signs, symptoms & treatment of angina, heart attack & stroke
- Provide CPR for an adult casualty
- Describe the benefits of applying an AED
- Help a choking casualty
- Deal with severe bleeding
- Deal with unconsciousness and shock
- Describe the symptoms of fainting and describe how to manage a fainting casualty
- Administer first aid for head and spinal injuries
- Assess and treat a casualty with a pelvic injury
- Describe the signs and symptoms of eye injuries
- Describe the care for bone, muscle & joint injuries
- Describe the causes of arc flash injuries to the eyes
- Demonstrate the first aid treatment for arc flash injuries to the eyes
- Define the signs and symptoms of chemical burns to the eyes and skin
- Demonstrate the treatment to the eyes and skin injuries using a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
- Describe different types of poisons
- Recognize environmental emergencies and provide treatment
- Recognize and treat common medical emergencies
- Identify when to use a SDS according to the OHS Code, Part 29, Section 413
- Demonstrate the importance of the OHS requirements in exam questions
This course will teach you how to help someone who is ill or has been injured (who we refer to as a casualty). Learning first aid skills will give you confidence and help you know what to do in an emergency.
The Apex program uses common objects, like traffic signs and acronyms, as teaching tools. These tools will help you remember skills you learn in this course.
